Standing in for his father
There is an invitation to a formal event, one spare place at it, and a husband who is not able to go. His wife puts her stepson into one of his father's suits and brings him along instead, and the other guests read the pair as married.
She does not correct anybody. By the time the evening is over she is no longer playing the mistake as a joke, and that is where the series starts: a stand-in role, held in public, that neither of them says out loud is only a role.
